Mildrey Alfonso Bacallao (born in Ciego de Ávila, Cuba, in 1975) is a playwright and poet. She joined the Fayad Jamís literary workshop in Guayos, Sancti Spíritus, in 2004, and her literary career has been linked to the workshop. She writes plays for adults and children, as well as poetry, and has received recognition in both genres at provincial forums for literary discussion.
She won first prize for playwriting in 2010 for A Chat with Mum, a monologue for adults, and again in 2013 for The Tale of Puss Without Boots, a play for children. Her poems have appeared in El Caimán Barbudo, in its “For the First Time” section for new writers. In 2018, she received recognition in the adult poetry category at the Provincial Literary Debate Forum.
She received the 2017 Sigifredo Álvarez Conesa Creative Writing Fellowship, offered by the Consejo Nacional de Casas de Cultura, and the Municipal Culture Award for 2017–2018. Alongside writing plays and poetry, she has taken part in literary training and published in Cuban cultural publications.
