Reading clubs
A reading club is one of the few places left where a book becomes a conversation. We're building somewhere for that to live.
It isn't open yet. We're building it, and we're doing it slowly and with real clubs in front of us, not blindly.
If you run a club —whatever its size, in your neighbourhood or over video— tell us about it below. We'll let you know as soon as it's ready, and you'll be telling us what you actually need.
What it's going to be
Not another forum. Every club will have its own, and a public side so it can be seen:
- A page of its own
- With your name, your story, who runs it and how you work. Public, so that anyone can find you.
- A calendar in plain sight
- Your meetings, talks and launches. Anyone passing by the site will see what you do and when, without having to ask.
- A gallery of what you do
- Photographs and videos of your meetings. A club is better explained by a photo of twelve people around a table than by a paragraph.
- A private space for members
- Entered with a link you hand out yourselves. That's where the inside things go: the members, what you're reading, whatever isn't public.
- Reading calls
- You propose a book, set the dates and the chapters, and it's all organised. When the work is ours, we'll be able to help with access; when it isn't, the club reads on its own and discusses just the same.
- One forum per book, not per club
- This is a decision and it's worth explaining: if every club had its own forum for the same book, there would be ten conversations of five people instead of one of fifty. The forum belongs to the book, and that's where clubs meet each other and other readers. When the author is one of ours, they'll be able to come in and talk to you.
How joining will work
Clubs don't sign themselves up: you ask, we look, and we approve. It's not about putting up barriers, it's because an empty or abandoned club page harms the club and the site. We want the ones that are here to be alive.
